Mayoral candidates have been squaring off throughout the election season, but on Thursday they will share their thoughts on strengthening the northwest corridors.

Johnson C. Smith hostsMayors Matter & Corridors Count. The major democratic candidates will participate and so will Republican candidate Edwin Peacock.

The debate will focus on questions generated from the Soul of the Northwest corridor survey, community forums, students and the Indaba group (community elders), said Dr. Laurie Porter, JCSU assistant professor of communication arts.

“We are particularly focusing on our own surrounding community,” Porter said.

The forum opens with former mayor Harvey Gantt, who will discuss the importance of the corridor.

“If a mayor has a vision and they are able to get the rest of the community to buy into what area we need to grow and how we need to do it,” Porter said.

City leaders have got to consider the northwest corridor, and the mayor has to lead, she said.
