LeBron James is giving kids from Akron a chance to go to college for free. He has partnered with the University of Akron to provide four-year scholarships to cover tuition -currently $9,500 per year. The Akron Public School students must complete the foundation’s I Promise Program and meet attendance and grade requirements to be eligible for the scholarship. Currently, there are 1,100 students in the program with 1,200 additional students expected to enter it during the next four years.
The university is renaming its education department the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education. The first class eligible for the scholarships will graduate in 2021.
