Talks about Challenges of Hiding Pregnancy
While Taping ‘Scandal’
Actress Kerry Washington has opened up about being pregnant, and the effort that went into hiding that pregnancy during the latest season of “Scandal.” Washington has portrayed tough-as-nails Olivia Pope for three seasons, with this latest season wrapping up last Sunday night.
“I work very physically as an actor,” Washington told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “The biggest thing for me has been the challenge of how to be this person [Olivia Pope] with the personal transformation that’s going on for me physically and how to stay true to this character. That hasn’t been easy. It’s been an awesome challenge for me as an actor because so much of how I access character is through my body.”
Throughout the season, the “Scandal” producers had to film around Washington’s growing baby bump, which included filming intimate scenes with a co-star and rather dangerous scenes in which Washington is thrown against a wall and choked. It was intense for Washington, who puts all of herself into her character.
“I’m just grateful for how hard everybody has worked to maintain the authenticity of this character in this world. I’m grateful to [costume designer] Lyn Paolo and all our producers,” Washington said. “The decision of whether or not a character would be on a similar journey, I had nothing to do with that decision. I trust Shonda [Rhimes, the creator] with all things. I feel very grateful that we have such an amazing team that was able to protect the character within the context of what the actress was going through.”
No one quite knows when Washington is actually due – the actress has worked very hard to keep her private life private. Speculation is that she is actually due any day now and fans are just waiting for word of a new baby. Washington married Nnamadi Asomugha in a secret ceremony on June 24, 2013 and has been tight-lipped about her life ever since being in the spotlight.
