When President Obama announced her as his choice for surgeon general, he accurately introduced Dr. Regina Benjamin as a relentless promoter of programs to fight preventable illness.
In 2009, all eyes were on Dr. Regina Benjamin as she took the reins as Surgeon General of the United States. Since then she has been improving the nation’s physical health and promoting a national culture of fitness along with encouraging African-American women to take control of their own health. Citing the toll of preventable illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking as reasons her family was not able to be with her at the announcement of her new appointment, Dr. Benjamin declared “I cannot change my family’s past, but I can be a voice to improve our nation’s health for the future.”
