Updated Wednesday Oct. 8 12:43 p.m.: Thomas Eric Duncan has died.

(DALLAS)— Thomas Eric Duncan‘s condition worsened over the weekend, but he’s now getting an experimental drug. It’s not ZMapp, but one made in North Carolina instead.

As Duncan fights Ebola in a Dallas hospital, Dallas City Council member Jennifer Gates said neighbors at the apartment complex where he got sick are fighting a different battle: fear.

“We still have some that have been turned away from jobs, some that have been turned away at retail locations so we’re getting them in touch with legal aid and any other resources necessary,” Gates said.

Experts are quick to say that people who don’t have symptoms of Ebola can’t pass it on.

Meantime, Duncan is finally getting an experimental drug, said Dr. David Lakey of the Texas Department of State Health Services.

“When he came into the hospital they were able to get him the treatments, the fluids, respiratory support that he needed at that time,” Lakey said. “So I can’t answer if he would have taken that experimental medicine earlier of not if it would have made a difference.”
