Queen Latifah and Common’s highly anticipated film ‘Just Wright’ opened Friday night, and it seems fans were eagerly waiting for the film’s opening. According to The Box Office Report the film grossed $8.5 million during the opening weekend, making it number 4 in weekend movie earnings. And it seems Queen Latifah was the star – and saving grace – for the film.

Robert Butler of McClatchy Newspapers, the family of papers that The Charlotte Observer belongs, says Queen Latifah made the movie.

Says Butler: “If it weren’t for the solid screen presence of Queen Latifah, there would be no reason to stick with the utterly mechanical ‘Just Wright.’ This ugly-duckling romance is as stale as last week’s bagel.”

It seems E! Online agrees, giving the movie a C rating, noting that the film shoots, but never scores. ” Queen Latifah stars as a physical therapist who totally crushes on an NBA All-Star player while helping him recuperate from a crushed knee. Unlike the real NBA, Just Wright has no Magic or Heat. The Bigger Picture: Romantic comedies offer few surprises—you’re rarely left Up in the Air about which two beautiful people will end up together. And while Wright stays all-too-safely within the boundaries of the genre, what is surprising is how many times this love-game movie drops the ball before the final buzzer. Latifah always exudes warmth and charm onscreen, but needs a more complexly written character than Leslie Wright, a sweet, b-ball-lovin’ Jersey girl looking for Mr. Right.”
