Yesterday, North Carolina election officials said that a revote is in order for its 9th Congressional District. During last year’s midterms, Mark Harris (R) had won the race for House rep by just 905 votes. However, election officials weren’t able to certify that the election as legitimate.  After investigating, it was found that Harris’s campaign was collecting incomplete absentee ballots, and filling them out – to Harris’ advantage.  It also turns out that Harris had been warned in advance that his campaign’s operations could be illegal, and that the involved parties were known for shady practices.

It was a testimony from Harris’s own son, John Harris, a 29-year-old Justice Department lawyer, that was perhaps the most astonishing. The younger Harris, saying that, “I love my dad, and I love my mom.  I certainly have no vendetta against them, no family scores to settle. I think they made mistakes in this process, and they certainly did things differently than I would have done them.” But he shared that he had been skeptical of his father’s campaign leads after analyzing returns in the 2016 election, and had actually shared in an email to his father BEFORE the election that he was fairly certain that what “…they do that is illegal is that they collected the completed absentee ballots and mail them all at once.” This is an email that his father’s campaign officials had failed to turn over to the court.
