There are a bevy of illnesses that have a major impact on the health of the African-American Community. Diabetes, Heart Disease, Hypertension and Sickle Cell are among some of the most prominent and recognized classes of disease impacting millions of African-American families. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 5 million of all African-American adults 20 years of age have diagnosed or undiagnosed Diabetes. The ADA also reports that every 17 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with Diabetes. The direct and indirect cost to treat Diabetes and the host of other diseases is in the hundreds of billions of dollars. ‘COMMUNITY VOICES’ host, Ron Holland, talked with Marilyn Green, President of the Gastonia Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Teretha Jones, RN also of Delta Sigma Theta, about the sorority’s efforts to combat Diabetes and a host of other diseases.
