Hurricane Nicole attained Category 4 status Wednesday night but weakened to a Category 3 storm Thursday, the hurricane center said. A storm surge will raise water levels by 6 to 8 feet above normal tides and 5 to 8 inches of rain are expected to fall over Bermuda through Thursday evening. With winds increasing to 130 mph, the storm at times boasted an eye to the hurricane that was larger than the island itself.
