Civil rights leader Benjamin Jealous will be the keynote speaker of the McCrorey YMCA’s 21st Annual MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast at the Charlotte Convention Center’s Crown Ballroom on Monday, January 19, 2015.. More than 1,100 are expected to participate in Charlotte’s largest celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s breakfast drew an estimated 1,200 attendees.

 

“Benjamin Jealous is known for being one of the most effective leaders of today,” says McCrorey YMCA Executive Director Karen Gipson. “We are excited to feature a true change agent to speak on such an important occasion.”

Jealous was the youngest president in the history of the NAACP where he began his career opening mail at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund when he was 18-years-old. Under his leadership, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization expanded its efforts online and on mobile and became the largest community-based nonpartisan voter registration operation in the country. Jealous recently joined the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kapor Capital, where he plans to continue his goal of growing opporutnities for minorities in the tech economy.
