John P. Kee Talks Stellar Awards Comeback
Gospel legend John P. Kee is heading into this year’s Stellar Awards in Charlotte with seven new nominations and a testimony that has left fans and fellow artists in awe.
During a recent conversation with host Melissa Wade on The Light 103.9, Kee reflected on a health crisis that nearly ended his career and his life. He said the moment feels unlike any of his previous honors, which include 28 career Stellar Awards.
“I literally died two years ago,” Kee said, recalling his battle with necrotizing fasciitis. He underwent five surgeries and said doctors doubted he would recover. “I was laying on my back to never get back up again.”
The recognition, Kee said, carries deeper meaning this year.
“I want to stand on that stage and say thank you to the millions of people that covered me in prayer,” he told Wade. “Uncle John is back.”
Kee noted that several of his nominations recognize older music he wrote earlier in his career. He is scheduled to open the Stellar Awards show in Charlotte.
Following the ceremony, Kee plans to host an after-party at his church for fans and family across the Raleigh-Durham area. He said the celebration will feature live performances and giveaways.
“We gonna celebrate this Stellar weekend,” Kee said.
Kee also thanked Wade for her support during his recovery. “You’re my family,” he said. “I want to thank you for standing with your cousin, letting him know that he could do it again.”
