One of the two brothers suspected in bombing the Boston Marathon is dead after a shootout with police near Cambridge. A manhunt is underway for the second brother. The brothers have been identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26; and still at large: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19.

Police are pursuing Dzhokhar. According to media reports, authorities have also detained a suspected accomplice on an Amtrak train headed to New York.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods and basically all of Boston to stay indoors. He asked everyone to stay home and not to open their doors for anyone who All mass transit was shut down and businesses were asked not to open Friday. People waiting at bus and subway stops were told to go home.

The dramatic event unfolded late Thursday evening when with the robbery of a 7/11 convenience store, according to news reports. Afterward, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was fatally shot while he sat in his car, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in statement. The suspects then hijacked a car in Cambridge. They released the driver a half-hour later at a gas station.

During the car chase, the suspects threw explosives out of the car window, according to the district attorney’s office.
