New NC Law Allows Armed Staff at Private Schools

By year’s end, North Carolina will allow private school staff with concealed carry permits to bring guns onto campus. The law passed after the Republican-led legislature overrode Governor Josh Stein’s veto. Supporters like retired educator Thomas Townsend say arming trained staff could make schools safer. The revised law gives private schools the authority to permit licensed individuals to carry firearms, though policies on additional training are left to each school. Critics, including Becky Ceartas of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence, argue the law could increase risks, noting that eight hours of training for a permit isn’t enough to ensure safety.
