As congenial Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson surges in the polls, he has landed in the crosshairs of front-runner Donald Trump, the brash New York real estate mogul known for his withering insults.

Trump and Carson, two outsider candidates who currently hold commanding leads in Republican voter polls with Trump out front, have been getting along nicely for months, reports The Washington Post. That was until Carson recently began to take what Trump perceived as digs at him, including raising questions about his plan to round up 12 million illegal immigrants, and challenging his faith.

The comments prompted Trump to unleash a fuselage of insults at Carson, calling the retired neurosurgeon just an “okay doctor,” reports The Washington Post:

“If you look at his past, which I’ve done, he wasn’t a big man of faith,” Trump said on CNN’s New Day morning show. “All of a sudden he’s becoming this man of faith and he was heavy into the world of abortion.”

Carson “makes Bush look like the Energizer bunny,” he said, adding that “Ben Carson will not be the next president, that I can tell you.”

Carson retreated almost immediately, calling for a ceasefire.

“The media frequently wants to goad people into wars, into gladiator fights, you know,” he said. “And I’m certainly not going to get into that.”

Do you think Trump will now dial it down?
