Organizers say 700 people showed up Tuesday, the first day of registration for a massive food giveaway on March 20 at The Park Expo Center on Independence Boulevard.
The international relief group Feed the Children intends to give away $1.4 million in food to 3,200 low-income families. Each family gets a voucher for 25 pounds of food and 10 pounds of personal care items and Avon products. Registration continues today and Thursday in two shifts, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4 p.m.-7 p.m., at The Park Church site at 6029 Beatties Ford Road. The effort is being coordinated by Salvation Army and The Park Church, which is lending use of The Park Expo Center.
