The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 21 people in 16 states have been infected with the E. coli bacteria.

“Customers have been asked that all products that were part of the December 24th recall be removed from commerce immediately,” National Steak and Poultry said in a statement. “Since then we have been working to have the product returned to National Steak and Poultry as part of the precautionary measures to protect consumers.

“As a customer of NSP we took immediate action when learning of this recall,” Nancy Mays, a spokeswoman for Applebee’s told NRN. “Any product that had potential to be affected was removed from restaurants.”

Darden Restaurants, the parent restaurant company of Olive Garden, also pulled the possibly-affected steaks from their eateries after National Steak and Poultry notified them of the recall.

Packages of recalled meat bear “EST. 6010T” inside the USDA mark of inspection and had a packaging date of Oct. 12, Oct. 13, Oct. 14 or Oct. 21, 2009.

For more information or questions about the recall, consumers may contact National Steak and Poultry at (866) 439-7348.
