The man suspected of killing Valerie Hamilton, the daughter of Concord Police Chief Merl Hamilton, was arrested in Niagara Falls, NY, according to news reports. Michael Neal Harvey, 34, will be charged in connection with the death of Hamilton, 23, who was last seen leaving Thomas Street Tavern in Plaza-Midwood early Wednesday morning.
Harvey, a registered sex offender with a long arrest history, moved to North Carolina about six years ago from upstate New York. His arrest came hours after Hamilton’s father appeared on “Good Morning America” appealing to the national law enforcement community to find Harvey. Details surrounding Harvey’s arrest, his relationship with Hamilton and her murder are still unclear. Charlotte detectives are headed to Niagara Falls to interview Harvey and begin extradition procedures.
There will be a candlelight vigil tonight for Hamilton in Concord. The vigil, sponsored by Concord city officials and the Cabarrus County chapter of Mothers of Murdered Offspring will be at 7 p.m. next to the Concord Police Department on Market Street.
