Former police officer Michael Slager who in 2015 shot and killed Walter Scott, an unarmed black man after a traffic stop was sentenced to 20 years in prison.  Slager initially reported that he fired his gun in self defense but video was eventually released showing Slager shooting Scott in the back as he ran away. He was fired and charged with murder. Last year, a deadlocked jury caused that case to be dropped, but Slager pleaded guilty in a subsequent federal civil rights violation.  This 20 year sentence marks one of the harshest sentences for an officer-related shooting in recent years.
