The main witness in the 1955 trial of the murder Emmett Till recently confessed to having lied in her testimony. Carolyn Bryant Donham, who is white, says now that she lied in saying that Till made verbal and physical advances towards her. Her accusation that he had done so was the cause given for what led the two men to kill Till, then a young boy. “That part’s not true,” she told Timothy Tyson, a Duke University senior research scholar in 2007. The original account of their interaction included Till whistling at her. The confession was revealed in Tyson’s new book, The Blood of Emmett Till.
