WBTV reporter Steve Crump is truly a local hero. Using his journalism talents, he has documented everything from black jockeys Kentucky to the fight for Civil Rights here in Charlotte and throughout the deep South. Last week, First Baptist-West honored Crump for his commitment to keeping our stories alive. It’s a much deserved honor for the 30-year journalism veteran.

“I think people who serve the community need to know that they have community support,” the Rev. Ricky Woods said, according to QCity Metro article, “particularly when you’re doing news, because oftentimes you’re having to make arguments over why a particular story has to be covered, particularly if it’s a positive story coming from a side of town where we don’t get a lot of positive news.

WBTV News Director Dennis Milligan said Crump’s knowledge of Charlotte’s black history may be unmatched, Qcity Metro reported.
