The 106-year-old woman who made us all smile when she danced with the Obamas last month, is sparking a rally of support from her community. Virginia McLaurin has expressed a desire to maintain her independence and stay close to her church in her home of Washington, D.C.

In order to do so she’ll have to rais funds so community members have set up a fundraising page so that she can have the resources she needs to live comfortably and to continue her active role in the community.  McLaurin serves as an advocate with the Latino Economic Development Center, a tenants’ rights organization, and volunteers in an early childhood classroom as a foster grandmother, close to 40 hours a week!

McLaurin has lived through 18 different presidencies and the video of her meeting and dancing with the Obamas has received over 63 million views.

The funds will be used to make sure she is in a building that’s wheelchair accessible and meets the needs of an elder as well as transportation and healthcare.
