Faith drama on television is back in fashion. In the last few years, we have seen a bulk of faith reality tv shows from ‘The Preachers of LA‘,  ‘Preachers Of Detroit‘, ‘The Sheards‘, ‘Fix My Choir‘, ‘Mary Mary‘, ‘ The Preacher’s Daughters and most recently Lifetime’s ‘Preach. Amazon studios has green-lighted a show that  deals with hedging  your faith bets on Earth. CBS and Fox are playing the ‘dare  to shock’ ticket. Usually, faith shows have straight forward faith messages. The upcoming tv season is going to scare believers and those sitting on the fence about faith and what is right or wrong.

Amazon’s ‘Hand Of God’ centers on Judge Harris, played by Ron Perlman, a hard-living married man with a high-end call girl on the side, who suffers a mental breakdown and goes on a vigilante quest to find the rapist who tore his family apart. The judge, is in the middle of a complete breakdown and disappears for three days, and when he comes back he’s baptized, saved and he’s donated $50,000 to this new startup church run by a former actor who used to be on daytime television. Suddenly he begins to hear voices through his son who is in a coma and cannot speak. He begins to think that these voices are sent to his son from God.

Ron admitted to Variety that this character was one of the best things he has ever read:

I’ve never seen something like “Hand of God.” I’ve been reading material for 45 years, and when I was gearing up find a TV series to do after “Sons of Anarchy,” I particularly read a lot of great, great, great scripts but there was this one which was not only great but very… there was no playbook or rulebook for it, it didn’t resemble anything I had done before. And the character I was being asked to consider was in an incredibly dangerous state emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.

It should be noted that CBS is playing with a hit topic faith show that may ruffle feathers as well. They are launching ‘Angel From Hell‘. This show is not ‘Touched By An Angel’! On the show the lead character Allison, a dermatologist, is organized and perfect, but her life is derailed when she meets brash, outspoken Amy, who claims to be her guardian angel in this irresistible comedy about an unlikely friendship. The real sticking point is that the angel, lusts, drinks and swears. The show will star Glee’s feature actress Jane Lynch.

Meanwhile, Fox is going the dark sexy taboo route with gasoline… literally.  They are adding a show called ‘Lucifer‘. Fox  announced the show will be on the network’s lineup in 2016, and a preview of the pilot episode can be seen online. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, the original fallen angel, Lucifer Morningstar has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld. One Million Moms has already launched a protest against the show.

What do you think? Are you interested in watching any of them? Do you feel like they are heading down a bad road?
