The family of Eric Garner has been awarded a $5.9 million settlement from New York City. Garner was killed by police while selling cigarettes on a Staten Island street last summer, and his death sparked many protests and the now famous “I Can’t Breathe!” slogan – words Garner repeatedly said to officers during the confrontatin. The agreement came yesterday, just a few days before a deadline the family set before filing a civil-rights lawsuit. The officer involved in Garners death was not indicted by a grand jury last December, and the family filed a notice of claim for $75 million.
