While all eyes were on President Obama for the 2014 night’s State of The Union address, as usual, style watchers had their eyes out for Lady Obama’s dress.
This year FLOTUS skipped an American designer and reached back in her closet for a frock from French designer Azzedine Alaïa — a move that’s already drawing chatter from critics who think she should’ve supported a US-based designer, considering the occasion (designer Oscar de la Renta has bashed the First Lady for this same “offense” in the past).
Michelle paired the conservative emerald dress with a sweater that covered up her infamous arms, perhaps to hush last year’s critics that deemed her shoulderless Jason Wu dress ”inappropriate for the occasion” (because no matter what she wears the woman can’t live).
But just like in 2013, Mrs. O recycled this year’s SOTU ensemble: she also wore the Alaïa outfit in December 2012, while giving Barbra Walters a tour of the White House Christmas decorations. At least no one can accuse of her of being insensitive and out of touch with the average working American, by wearing a brand new designer dress. We know they’d go there…
What did you think of this year’s SOTU look?
