PROVIDENCE, R.I. — In a move meant to prepare for drastic budget cuts, officials in Rhode Island have issued pink slips to the city’s public school teachers.

Though the slips are currently just a precautionary measure, the Providence school district faces a $40 million deficit, leaving teacher’s futures in jeopardy.

The Huffington Post reports:

The budget won’t be filed until April, so the exact budget cuts won’t be known for months. Meanwhile, every teacher’s job hangs in the balance.

Officials have issued pink slips to every single public school teacher in the city — all 1,926.

Since the law requires that teachers are informed by March 1 if they are going to be laid off, officials informed them all — just in case.
