Donna Brazile is recognized and respected for her ability to tell it like it is. This ability has come as a result of advice she’s received – from her encounters with extraordinary people – over the years.
In this month’sO, The Oprah Magazine, Donna shares her 6 rules on the smartest advice she’s received.
1. Be the buffalo.
Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee nation, once told Donna how the cow runs away from the storm while the buffalo charges directly toward it—and gets through it quicker. Whenever Ms. Brazile is faced with adversity, she doesn’t procrastinate and avoid the issue. She becomes the buffalo.
2. Organize the small to make room for the big.
Ms. Brazile admits she’s addicted to gadgets. She says, “Trouble is, I keep forgetting where I put them. ” One of her friends once asked her said, “Our lives are spent in moments—how many of them do you want to waste looking for your cell phone or BlackBerry?” The questions prompted her to realize that finding a place for everything frees up time to pursue what you really want.
3. Go help someone.
Donna says, her mom wasn’t very patient woman. If she ever complained about being lonely or bored, her mom would tell her to go help someone, anyone. To this day, Donna says when she starts to feel sorry for herself, she looks for a good deed to do.
