Below, Patillo breaks down the significance of the Dove Awards’ two new urban categories, this year’s “Love. Amplified.” theme and more in an exclusive Q&A…

ALIYA FAUST: You’re the perfect person to be doing this. Not only is faith at the forefront, but your background in the music business is so extensive. What are you looking forward to most this year at the Dove Awards?

JACKIE PATILLO: There’s a few things; I’m looking forward to Tye Tribbett and for King & Country as our cohosts. They are an unlikely duo and I think it’s going to be really magical when they step onto the stage together.

How’d you guys come up with that combo?

In my career I follow a principal that says to find out where God is moving and join Him. And, God is just moving through these guys. Not that he’s not moving through others, but these are the ones that He brought to my attention and when I asked, I didn’t even know that for King & Country had a movie coming out called Priceless the week after the Dove Awards. And Tye Tribbett has just started the Joyful Noise show on BET and it’s going to be aired a week prior. So the timing seems to be right for both of them.

I’m looking forward to seeing them as well. GMA actually added two new categories this year. Can you tell me a little more about that?

Yes! We added the “Urban Worship Song” and “Urban Worship Album” categories this year. It was very apparent, as worship has been growing by leaps and bounds, that these categories were necessary to represent our gospel artists accurately and so rather than lumping them into a category of traditional or urban gospel, we established these two worship categories in hopes that we could really serve our artists better.

Can you break that down for the average viewer?

You can’t really compare an artist like Lecrae with an artist like Hezekiah Walker. Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar, same message, but different style.

Right. What’s your thoughts on this new wave of gospel music?

Music is a universal language and it’s all inspired by God. So to see these new trends of music coming to the forefront is just another way for the gospel to go out and we see that it’s being very effective. No one imagined that rap and hip-hop would be at the forefront like it is right now. Even without radio airplay. The people have spoken. I think that God is moving by His spirit and with many wonders to perform.

I love it! What’s the lineup like this year?

The lineup is going to be really strong. We’ve got Tamela Mann, as well as Anthony Brown performing. Tye Tribbett’s going to bring the house down as usual. Along with TobyMac and Hillsong. The Dove Awards stage is the only stage that has all genres of gospel music; it’s going to be a wonderful night of celebration.

I just saw Hillsong in New York. Amazing.

It’s powerful. Our theme this year is “Love. Amplified.” and I think as we come together and celebrate God’s diverse kingdom, there’s going to be a lot of love in the room.

The writer in me noticed the punctuation of theme. Seems intentional.

Last year our theme was “Better Together” and that was very intentional. This year when we thought about it, and wanting to take it up another notch, love amplified was put on the table and everyone gravitated to it because it does allow us to show love as an action word. And since it is music that is our action, we’re hoping that everyone will feel the love of God through these sacred and special songs.

The 2016 Dove Awards returns to Nashville on October 11 at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena and is slated to air Sunday, October 16 on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). Click HERE for the official list of nominees.
