Black Lives Matter activists made their presence felt at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Scores of protesters walked 6 miles to spread awareness about police misconduct and the negative impact it has on our nation. The Black Lives Matter group teamed up with the Philly Coalition for R.E.A.L. Justice and other organizations. Their trek began on the streets of North Philadelphia, a predominantly Black neighborhood. “This is where the brutality begins,” said protest organizer Asa Khalif. “This is ‘the hood.’ And we need to educate our people in this ‘hood’ to let them know we haven’t abandoned them.” Several people who protested held signs displaying the names of individuals slain by police officers. Hours after the protest, Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, and other women who lost their sons to gun violence appeared on stage at the Democratic National Convention. FLOTUS Dons Statement Dress at DNC
First Lady Michelle Obama stole the show at the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening with an awe-inspiring speech and a dress that made a statement of its own. FLOTUS donned a silk blue cap-sleeved flared dress created by designer Christian Siriano. Siriano, best known for winning the fourth season of Project Runway, has used his work as an avenue to make fashion more inclusive. He designs pieces for women of all shapes and sizes. He recently created a custom piece for comedian Leslie Jones after she shared her struggles finding a designer who would make something for her six-foot-tall frame. “I just don’t think anyone should be excluded from having a beautiful dress,” he said. Siriano has also worked with the plus-size chain Lane Bryant. This is the second time FLOTUS has worn a Siriano piece. Throughout her time in the White House, she has made a conscious decision to wear outfits from designers who stand for something. Read more.
Celebrities Unite for Campaign Against Donald Trump
The United Against Hate Group is a collective of notable celebrities who are urging Americans to sign an online petition on MoveOn.org to prevent Donald Trump from being elected. “We are a coalition of artists who, today, are joining millions of Americans in our commitment to defeat the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump. We believe it is our responsibility to use our platforms to bring attention to the dangers of a Trump presidency, and to the real and present threats of his candidacy,” reads the website. “When dangerous and divisive leaders have come to power in the past, it has been in part because those of goodwill failed to speak out for themselves or their fellow citizens. Some of us come from the groups Trump has attacked. Some of us don’t. But as history has shown, it’s often only a matter of time before the “other” becomes me. We call upon every American to join us–to stand together on the right side of history, to use the power of our voice and the power of our vote to defeat Donald Trump and the hateful ideology he represents.” Some of the participating celebrities include Shonda Rhimes, Russell Simmons, Kerry Washington, and Talib Kweli.
