Premiere Of Columbia Pictures' 'This Is The End' - Arrivals

NBC announced decisions regarding two of its programs helmed by Black actors. The network has canceled the Craig Robinson comedy Mr. Robinson and renewed The Carmichael Show featuring comedian Jerrod Carmichael for another season.

Robinson’s show faced inconsistent ratings and failed to bring in viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. During its premiere in August, the show was the highest rated comedy for a Big Four network in six years. Robinson, known for his roles in The Office and Hot Tub Time Machine, played a Chicago teacher who also dabbles in a music career.

Mr. Robinson was originally developed in 2013 with a six-episode order. Recastings and new hires pushed it to a 2015 summer release without pilot creator Owen Ellickson.

Meanwhile, successful The Carmichael Show is loosely based on the life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael. The freshman comedy examines growing pains with Carmichael’s girlfriend (Amber Stevens West) and parents (Loretta Devine and David Allen Grier). Like Kenya Barris’ comedy black-ish, the show tackles social and racial topics like gun control and the Black Lives Matter Movement in a serious, but comical way. “We’re extremely proud of The Carmichael Show and Jerrod’s voice and point of view is a breath of fresh air in a comedy series,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said. “This show made a big impact with viewers and critics because it’s funny and relatable but also because it’s fearless about discussing issues that are significant in the world today. We appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this new family comedy from the producers, cast and crew and look forward to bringing it back to the schedule later this season.”

A date for season two has yet to be finalized. Grier’s involvement with The Wiz will more than likely affect the anticipated premiere date.
