At least five African-American churches were damaged or destroyed in fires in the past week. The Southern Poverty Law Center reports that three of the five – in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina – have been declared arson.

Two other fires in South Carolina and Ohio have not had investigations completed in determining the cause. The SPLC is working to identify if these fires can be classified as hate crimes, being that these incidences happened just one week after nine people were shot and killed at the historic Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, SC.
