It’s been almost a week since the Amtrak derailment tragedy took place in Philadelphia, and the railroad company has decided to restore service between New York and Pennsylvania. Departures from both states resumed earlier Monday morning. “The safety of our passengers and crew remains our number one priority. Our infrastructure repairs have been made with the utmost care and emphasis on infrastructure integrity including complete compliance with Federal Railroad Administration directives,” Amtrak President & CEO Joe Boardman said in a statement. “Amtrak staff and crew have been working around the clock to repair the infrastructure necessary to restore service for all the passengers who travel along the Northeast Corridor.” The derailment killed eight people and injured over 200. Pride month is upon us, and President Obama is bringing attention to the importance of LGBT rights. Sunday marked International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), and the president took the initiative to address LGBT discrimination in the workplace and how it is integral for the community to have rights in other countries. “Overseas, I am proud of the steps that the United States has taken to prioritize the protection and promotion of LGBT rights in our diplomacy and global outreach,” said President Obama in a statement. “All people deserve to live free from fear, violence, and discrimination, regardless of who they are or whom they love.” Read more.
Evander Holyfield and Mitt Romney Box For Charity
Last Friday, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney met five-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in the ring for an unusual showdown in Salt Lake City. They went toe-to-toe to raise money for CharityVision, an organization geared towards combating blindness. Romney trained with Holyfield prior to the bout. “The good news is that Evander Holyfield always hits above the belt, and sometimes in politics that isn’t the way things are done,” said Romney.
