After being hospitalized last week, gospel legend Andraé Crouch died about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a Los Angeles area hospital. He was 72. His family has requested privacy. The gospel community poured out it’s sympathy via Twitter Thursday evening.  Read their notes here.

Crouch was known as the “Modern Father of Gospel.” While Crouch was legendary in the gospel community, he also made an impact on secular music. Crouch’s songs were recorded by Elvis Presley and Paul Simon. Crouch collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Elton John, Quincy Jones and Diana Ross. Crouch sang on Michael Jackson’s “Man In the Mirror” and Madonna’s “Like A Prayer.” Crouch received an Academy Award nomination for his composition work on “The Color Purple” soundtrack.
