Chicago, IL — It’s full steam ahead for the Maestro himself, Donald Lawrence. After a battle with cancer, and coming out from it on the other side, Lawrence says, “I haven’t missed a beat.” Speaking with him exclusively, the Producer, Singer, Multiple Music Award Winner told us here at The Belle Report, it’s been a year, since he was diagnosed with Cancer, battled it and finally hearing the doctors say, “You are Cancer Free!”
During his journey, Lawrence said, very few people knew he was going through what he was going through except a hand full of close friends, including his manager.
Lawrence said initially he didn’t know what to do. “I was like this is a lot here. I had never had a crazy disease like this before in my entire life. I have never been operated on before in my life so I really didn’t know what to do. I just remember that day and telling myself I just need to breathe, so I took a walk. I do that a lot in the summer time in Chicago.”
After that Lawrence says he started to focus and figure out what he needed to do next. He met with his doctors but then it became a matter of dealing with feeling paranoid for fear of what the doctors might say. Lawrence said, “You’re paranoid and you’re thinking every time you visit your doctor, you’re going to hear something bad. So at times I was wondering, if they were going to tell me that the cancer had spread to my organs or to my bones or what, because that’s the one thing about prostate cancer. Yes it’s curable but people usually don’t get to it, until it’s too late.”
Lawrence also said, “I also had a trigger from Bishop Hawkins, passing away. I remember sitting down with him and hearing him say, ‘I have this stomach flu and it won’t go away.’ I said a Stomach Flu doesn’t last that long if you go get it checked. By the time he came back he had pancreatic cancer and then two years later he was gone. So all of those things were racing through my mind and that wasn’t a good feeling. But challenges come and go but you have to decide how you are going to deal with them. They can either be a lesson for you or you can let them take you down, but I’m not that guy. I don’t go down without a fight.”
So Lawrence simply decided to be quite about his health issues and shut down for a few months. He moved to Los Angeles for about four months where he was being treated so he could focus on his health!
“Sheilah, my musicians didn’t even know what was going on until I was gone. But sometimes when you are dealing with situations like health, sometimes everyone doesn’t need to know. Often they will get sad, start crying and some will give you a death sentence.”
However Lawrence said, he is happy with how he handled his situation and he’s now moving full steam ahead.
Currently he is celebrating the release of the Tri-City Singers CD/DVD Season, which highlights the group’s longevity of 20 years of being together with their top 15 hit songs.
As Lawrence looks ahead, he is also planning on opening a School in a few years. “I’m thinking about calling it the Conservatory of Arts, where the focus will be on entertainment, media management and where it would teach and help talented people the other aspects of their craft. It would focus also not on just their artistic side, but their business side as well, Lawrence tells The Belle Report.”
Lawrence says it would also prep them to enter into the music industry and any door that they are going after.
Needless to say, but God is far from being through with Lawrence as his camp continues to grow. With talent like Tri-City, DeWayne Woods, and a long list of artists he has groomed, the Best Is Yet to Come, truly for Donald Lawrence.
