Each of us has at least one aspect of our physical appearance that we don’t like. We hide it as best we can, but in the back of our mind we know it’s there. We flinch whenever someone, usually a loved one, points it out.

In this week’s column, QcityMetro columnist and friend Lashawnda Becoats reveals her struggle with prematurely gray hair. It’s a genetic trait that’s plagued her since her early ’20s. Her efforts to hide her gray has led to many a Friday night booed up with a bottle of hair color and the mirror.

In her column Friday, Becoats examines why she’s ashamed of her gray hair and her desire to embrace her true self.

Will she have the courage?

Since posting the column, many women have acknowledged — on QcityMetro and Becoats’ Facebook page — their own struggle with gray hair. The conversation however is not about the hair color, but what it represents. Why are we as women so afraid of appearing older?
