Millions of Americans are hitting the roads and skies this Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial start of summer while honoring the nation’s fallen service members.

From small-town parades to solemn ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, communities across the U.S. are remembering those who died in military service. The holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, dates back to the Civil War era. Many American’s are known to celebrate the 3-day weekend by cooking on the grill, have cookouts, play music and enjoy one another’s company.
