East Charlotte’s Independence Boulevard is slated for significant changes, according to an announcement by the North Carolina Department of Transportation on Tuesday. The project, split into two phases, aims to enhance one of Charlotte’s busiest routes, U.S. 74, with additional lanes, new interchanges, and overpasses.

According to WCCB, NCDOT communications officer Jen Goodwin, emphasized the necessity of expanding this vital roadway. The first phase will focus on the western section of Independence, stretching from I-277 to Idlewild Road, widening the road to accommodate increased traffic flow. The second phase, organized into ten phases, aims to improve connectors throughout the Independence corridor before construction begins.
