Waller County District Judge Albert McCaig has dropped perjury charges against the Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who arrested Sandra Bland in 2015. Officer Brian Encinia arrested Bland following a routine traffic stop. She was found dead three days later in her jail cell. Encinia was indicted in 2016 on a perjury charge for allegedly lying on Bland’s arrest report, but Judge McCaig dropped the charges yesterday at the prosecution’s request, as the officer (who was fired) agreed to give up his police license, and never work again in law enforcement.
