Before he got sick, Keshaun could often be found playing ball. He would either be on the baseball field, where he played right field, or, if it was winter, he’d be shooting a round on the basketball court.

Jayla and Felicia were both born with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis type 1, or NF1. Not only does the disorder cause tumors to grow on the nerves, but it also may cause heart problems, high blood pressure and developmental delays.

When Donovan was born, his family learned he suffered from sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and sickle-shaped, instead of soft and round.

These days, when Ethan’s mom cues up her Zumba workout in the living room, she soon finds that she’s not dancing alone. Ethan, her 5-year-old son, has appeared right next to her in front of the TV screen.
