This holiday season, The Harvest Center of Charlotte, Inc. along with Community Outreach Christian Ministries will host The 1st Annual Thanksgiving Telethon, which will be held at The Harvest Center, located at 1800 Brewton Drive, off Statesville Rd. All proceeds from the event will go towards furthering The Harvest Center’s efforts to feed the hungry and end homelessness in Charlotte. Donations can be made onsite or online at www.theharvestcenter.org. Donors can also send checks by mail.

More on The Harvest Center.

The four-day telethon will kick off on Sunday November 20, 2011 with a Sunday Morning Glory service featuring special guests Micah Stampley and Laurieann Gibson. Monday night is Youth Night. There will be special performances by local area youth along with Laurieann Gibson, Earnest Pugh, Le’Andria Johnson, Jessica Reedy and Wess Morgan. The following Tuesday and Wednesday, The Harvest Center, along with featured guests Myron Butler, Kim Burrell, Laurieann Gibson and Jonathan Nelson, will be serving Thanksgiving meals to needy families.

Since its inception nearly 20 years ago, The Harvest Center has provided hot meals for the hungry and shelter for the homeless. In addition, the center has also provided a host of other services, including medical testing, recovery meetings, transportation, job skills and educational opportunities, to countless individuals and families in need.

With the economic downturn, demand for services has drastically increased as donations received have greatly declined. “With so many people being out of work, we are seeing the needs are so much greater than in years past,” said Stephen Smith, Executive Director for The Harvest Center. “At the same time donations from individuals, churches and corporate donors have dwindled. It’s just kind of been the perfect storm in the worst way in that sense. We still have been able to manage but we are really trying to raise the contribution level and tap into some different resources.”

Last year, The Harvest Center distributed over 1.8 million pounds of food. This year they expect to serve more than 112,000 hot meals to individuals and families. Funds raised during the Thanksgiving Telethon will help the center to continue fulfilling its mission of providing hope and opportunities that help the less fortunate become productive members of society and ending homelessness in Charlotte, one life at a time.

Sunday Morning Glory service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday Youth Night will begin at 7 p.m., and Thanksgiving meals will be served on Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. All events are free and open to the public.
