On the  50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, President Barack Obama appeals to restore it, calling on Congress to update the law.

The Supreme Court amended the act two years ago with a ruling that allows jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to have voting changes without having them pre-approved by the Justice Department.

These states have historically used voter ID laws to disenfranchise minorities, lower income earners, and young people and discourage them from voting.
