Aretha Franklin and Smokey RobinsonSociety Of Singers has selected music icon Smokey Robinson as the 20th ELLA Award recipient.  The announcement was made today by Erica Farber, the president of SOS.  The honor will be presented to Robinson during a special ceremony on September 19 in Beverly Hills.  The invite-only event will feature a star-studded musical tribute and special guest appearances by celebrity friends of the Motown legend.  SOS will also honor Aretha Franklin with the Legend Award as part of the celebration.

The ELLA is a prestigious award presented each year to a select entertainer for their significant achievements in music and for their dedicated efforts to benefit the community and worldwide humanitarian causes.  The ELLA Award is named after renowned jazz great Ella Fitzgerald who was the first recipient in 1989.  Past ELLA honorees include Natalie Cole, Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, Andy Williams, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis, Elton John, Celine Dion, Barry Manilow, Placido Domingo, Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Lena Horne, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee, Tony Martin and Frank Sinatra.

Smokey Robinson has logged 37 Top 40 hits in his career and has received a number of significant awards, including a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, a Grammy® for “Best R&B Performance, Male,” and the Soul Train Music Award for Career Achievement.  He has been inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has also received the prestigious Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award from ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).  Smokey Robinson has been inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame both as a solo artist and with his group, The Miracles.  He received a Kennedy Center honor in 2006 and is the sterling pen and satin voice behind such mega hits as “Shop Around,” “Tracks of My Tears,” “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Tears of a Clown,” “I Second That Emotion,”and “Going to a Go-Go,” among many others.
