Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced Thursday that she plans to file for reelection next week. A victory in November would mark her fifth term in office, according to WFAE.

Lyles, first elected in 2017, would become the city’s second-longest-serving mayor—trailing only Republican Pat McCrory, who served for 14 years.

As a strong favorite to win, Lyles’ candidacy likely shifts the spotlight this fall to a key issue on the ballot: a proposed 1-cent sales tax increase to fund transportation improvements, one of her signature initiatives.
