North Carolina Hires 80 New DMV Employees to Address Backlog

Governor Josh Stein and DMV Commissioner Paul Tine addressed what they’re calling a “DMV crisis” on Friday, citing long lines and appointment backlogs at driver license offices across the state.
According to WCCB, about 3,900 people wait in line daily, with an additional 2,000 holding appointments. In response, the state has hired 80 new driver license examiners, now deployed across North Carolina.
Beginning this weekend, 20 offices—five in the local area—will offer walk-in hours from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Stein’s proposed 2025–2027 budget includes funding for 61 more examiners and 24 support staff.
