Whataburger, the beloved Texas-based fast food chain, is bringing its signature burgers to North Carolina for the first time, with a new restaurant set to open in Gastonia later this month.

The location, at East Franklin Boulevard near Lineberger Road, will officially open its doors at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 29.

Whataburger, founded in 1950, is expanding into the Charlotte region with several new restaurants in the works. According to WBTV, the company broke ground in January on a location in Hickory, which is scheduled to open in June. However, the Gastonia restaurant will be the first to open in the state.

Additional Whataburger locations are planned for Albemarle Road in Charlotte and in Indian Land, South Carolina, just over the state line.

The brand is known for its made-to-order burgers, orange-and-white striped roofs, and a loyal fan base that stretches well beyond its Texas roots.
