Charlotte’s Carolina Theatre Set To Reopen its doors March 24th

Closed since 1978, the historic Carolina Theatre in Uptown Charlotte will reopen on Monday, March 24, at 3 p.m. with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a free Open House until 7 p.m. The theatre will serve as a key part of the Belk Place civic campus, alongside the Foundation For The Carolinas’ headquarters and event venues. The campus is named in honor of the families of Katherine Belk, the late Thomas M. Belk, and the late Claudia and John M. Belk. Originally opened in 1927 on Tryon Street, the Carolina Theatre thrived for decades before closing. Recognized for its architectural significance and sentimental value, the theatre has remained vacant since 1978, per WCCB. In 2012, the city of Charlotte transferred ownership of the property to the Foundation For The Carolinas for $1, kicking off a $90 million campaign to restore the iconic venue. The extensive eight-year restoration process began in 2017.
