Starting May 7, 2025, North Carolinians will need a REAL ID to board commercial flights and access federal buildings and military bases. This requirement will apply nationwide, meaning travelers and those needing entry to secure locations must have a REAL ID or an alternative federally-approved ID, such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or permanent resident card.

According to WBTV, to check if your ID is a REAL ID, look for a star in the upper right corner. If it’s not there, you’ll need to visit a North Carolina DMV office in person to obtain one, as they cannot be ordered online. It’s recommended to secure a REAL ID before the deadline to avoid disruptions in travel and access.
