January is recognized as National Blood Donor Month, a time to honor the selfless individuals who donate blood and to encourage more people to give. The American Red Cross and other organizations use this month to highlight the critical need for blood donations, especially during winter when donations typically decline.

Each donation can save up to three lives, and with colder weather and holiday schedules affecting donor turnout, hospitals rely heavily on a steady supply of blood. According to the Red Cross, blood donations are needed year-round, but January poses a particular challenge due to the combination of seasonal illnesses and fewer mobile blood drives.

Donors are urged to schedule appointments to help ensure hospitals have the blood they need to treat patients facing surgeries, trauma, cancer, and more. Those interested in donating can visit local donation centers or attend mobile drives in their communities.
