Federal health officials announced Wednesday that a 10th person has died due to a listeria outbreak linked to a Boar’s Head deli meat plant. At least 59 individuals across 19 states have been infected, with all requiring hospitalization, according to WCCB. The outbreak was traced back to liverwurst produced at the facility in Jarratt, Virginia, with illnesses reported from late May to late August.
The latest death occurred in New York, contributing to two fatalities each in New York and South Carolina, and one each in Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, and New Mexico.
In response to the outbreak, Boar’s Head announced on September 13th the closure of the Jarratt plant and the cessation of liverwurst production. Inspections had uncovered serious sanitation issues, including mold, insects, and meat residue on surfaces that had been present for over two years.
