NYC Pizza Box Trash Cans to Fight Rats

New York City has a new weapon in its fight against the rat population: pizza box-specific trash cans. The NYC Parks Department has begun installing specially designed square trash bins across the city’s parks to reduce litter from pizza boxes, a major attraction for rodents.
The initiative, led by Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, seeks to minimize the city’s rodent problem by preventing rats from feasting on leftover pizza boxes, which are often left beside overfilled round bins. So far, six of the new trash cans have been installed in Greenwich Village, with more set to roll out citywide in the coming weeks.
This move comes after several other anti-litter and recycling efforts were introduced earlier this year. As NYC’s battle with rats continues, residents are hopeful these new bins will help clean up the streets and reduce the rat population’s access to discarded pizza.
