A Union County high school student has been diagnosed with tuberculosis, public health officials announced on Thursday.

Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs and spreads through the air, can lead to serious illness and be contagious if untreated.

According to WBTV, the active case involves a student from Porter Ridge High School, who is reportedly adhering to proper treatment protocols for active pulmonary tuberculosis. Public Health officials recommend that parents of potentially exposed individuals—estimated to be at least 270 people—have their children tested. Free testing is available at Union County Human Services, and those with positive results will receive support and medication at no cost.
